Set of 9 lithops in a rainbow of colors including a PURPLE lithops salicola bacchus. Shown in a 3½" pot.

Should be planted in a plant that is a small diameter with 4" of depth to ensure proper root growth.

Native Range: Lithops, also known as "Living Stones," originate from the arid regions of southern Africa.

USDA Hardiness Zone: Lithops are suitable for USDA hardiness zones 9 and above.

Care Instructions:

Life Cycle: Lithops have a unique life cycle consisting of two distinct phases: growth and dormancy. During the growth phase, which typically occurs in spring and autumn, the plant develops new leaves and establishes its root system. In the dormancy phase, which usually takes place in summer and winter, Lithops go through a rest period and require minimal watering.

Growing Season: Lithops primarily grow during spring and autumn when temperatures are mild. It is essential to mimic their natural growing conditions for optimal health.

Watering: Lithops have specific watering requirements. During the growing season, water them sparingly but thoroughly. Allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings. Overwatering can cause the plant to rot, so it's crucial to avoid excessive moisture. In the dormant phase, reduce watering significantly and provide just enough moisture to prevent shriveling.

Soil Composition: Lithops thrive in well-draining soil that replicates their native environment. A suitable soil mix of 90% inorganic material to 10% organic material can be created by combining coarse sand, pumice or perlite, and a cactus potting mix. This mixture ensures excellent drainage and prevents waterlogging.

CAM Photosynthesis: Lithops employ Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis, which allows them to absorb carbon dioxide at night and store it for use during the day. This adaptation helps them conserve water by opening their stomata at night, reducing water loss through transpiration.

Troubleshooting Tips:

Overwatering: If you notice signs of overwatering such as yellowing, softening, or rotting of the plant, reduce watering immediately. Adjust the watering schedule and ensure the soil dries out completely before the next watering.

Underwatering: If the leaves appear wrinkled and shriveled, it indicates underwatering. Increase watering frequency during the growing season but ensure the soil is adequately drained.

Lighting: Lithops require bright, indirect sunlight. If the plant becomes elongated or stretches towards the light source, it may indicate insufficient light. Move the plant to a brighter location or provide supplementary grow lights.

Pest Control: Keep an eye out for common succulent pests such as mealybugs or spider mites. If detected, treat them promptly with an appropriate organic insecticide or by wiping the affected areas with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.
